Graubunden

Vacation corner of Switzerland

1. Info

"Ferien ecke der Schweiz" is a slogan of tourism in Graubunden, which is in fact a small peace of Switzerland right in the eastern part of the country. And indeed they are devoted to tourism, especially to outdoor sports tourism. St. Moritz, Davos, Savognin, if I name a few places, are world wide known tourist resorts which are worth a visit.
Ober Engadin valley is very interesting in particular. It stretches from the Maloja pass, over Silvaplana and St. Moritz and to Samedan. It is covered with small lakes and lies 1800 m above sea level. Mountain peaks which surround the valley are up to 4000 m above sea level. The nature in the valley is preserved more than anywhere else. Terrain is very suitable for mountain biking. The valleys are just right with nice cart tracks and singletracks. There are also some interesting passes with more difficult trails. In general trails go above 2700 m.

Tourism is quite developed in this region. But that doesn't bother much, since because of that there are numerous pathways and macadam roads connecting interesting places. Majority of pathways (90%) are open to mountain bikers. Thus you really don't need to use main asphalt road at all. Which is nice.

You can also buy a special MTB map - Ober Engadin Bike Trail Map. This is not just another tourist map with some sort of cycling routes. This is a topographic map (1:50.000 scale), printed on Tyvek material, which is water and tear resistant. As a bike map it is excellent, since the trails are divided according to the type and dificullty: macadam, cart track, singletrack and radical singletrack. It is very accurate and useful. It costs CHF 20 and it's worth that much.
