4. Basic bike components
Shifting:
- front and rear derailleur, gear shifters
- today 3x9 gear system is most common, as well as
3x8 and 3x7 for lower price tag bikes
Drive train:
- cranks with chain rings (front), the chain,
sprocket cluster (rear), bottom bracket, pedals
- pedals are usually "automatic" - so
called SPD pedals (SPD = Shimano Pedaling Dynamics)
Brakes:
- brake levers, braking mechanism, pads
- breaking force can be applied to the rim (i.e.
V-brakes or any older bicycle brakes) or to a
special disc mounted to the hub of the wheel (disc
brakes)
- the levers and brake can be connected by a wire or
oil (hydraulics)
- V-brakes are most common these days as the wire
type and disc brakes as the oil type
